The Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua has called for the responsible and sustainable utilisation of the available natural resources in order to protect environment and also ensure future use.
Speaking on Friday at the closing ceremony of 7th Uganda Water and Environment Week, Obua said the mentioned natural resources are paramount to socio-economic development.
“Water and environment resources are at the core of sustainable development and are critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and human survival, sustainable utilisation of these resources will be critical in the achievement of Uganda’s National Development Plan III goals and targets,” said Obua.
He noted that there is increasing pressure on natural resources and appealed to stakeholders to be more innovative in addressing the contributing factors.
“Natural resources are under increasing pressure from degradation due to increased demand for agricultural land, urbanisation, settlement, and infrastructure development. The continued loss and degradation of wetlands, forests and river banks affect livelihoods and our ability to mitigate impacts of climate change,” he noted.
Adding: “This therefore calls for more efforts in ensuring that these resources are sustainably managed and utilized for the present and future generations.”
The 7th Uganda Water and Environment Week 2024 was commemorated under the theme: “Rethinking collective action and innovative solutions to water, environment, and climate change crisis in Uganda”.
