TORORO – One person was killed in a renewed land dispute between two rice-growing communities in the Nweyo-Amurwo wetland area on Saturday morning.

The victim, John Martine Ofamba Obbo, was a Naweyo East Village, Namwendya Parish, resident in the Sop Sop Sub-county of Tororo District.

The clashes, involving residents from Merikit and Sop Sop sub-counties, also resulted in two people sustaining serious injuries.

The conflict is reported to have been instigated by a group from Tororo County, who attacked their neighbours in West Budama Northeast.

The longstanding dispute centres on access to a wetland that borders West Budama and Tororo County. During the confrontation, Ofamba was killed by farmers armed with pangas and hoes.

Authorities confirmed that Ofamba’s body was recovered and transported to Tororo General Hospital for a postmortem examination.
