Kampala – The ongoing property saga involving Shumuk Group and Drake Lubega has taken a significant turn, as Shumuk Group, led by CEO Mukesh Shukla, successfully reclaims ownership of a prime two-acre plot in Kampala’s Nakawa Industrial Area.
This development marks a pivotal moment in the company’s expansion strategy, with plans for a substantial investment of UGX 3 billion into a modern In-land Car Depot (ICD) and related projects.
The plot, located on Mukabya Road, has been at the center of legal disputes for decades, involving not only Drake Lubega but also the family of the late businessman Haruna Semakula. Despite these challenges, Shumuk Group has maintained its claim to the land, ultimately securing a freehold title from Kampala Capital City Authority in 2015.
Speaking at a press conference at Shumuk’s Kampala headquarters, Mukesh Shukla expressed satisfaction with the resolution of the long-standing disputes and the company’s renewed focus on growth.
“I am pleased to announce that we have successfully repossessed and taken ownership of plot M24/26 Mukabya Road in Nakawa. This land, belonging to our subsidiary Middle North Agencies Ltd, has been an empty piece of land for many years, but we have now cleared it and begun meaningful developments,” he said.
The planned investment includes the construction of a state-of-the-art car bond, which will serve as a key addition to Shumuk Group’s diverse portfolio of businesses.
Mukesh emphasized that the new developments will not only enhance the company’s operations but also contribute to the broader economic landscape of the area.
The reclaimed plot’s prime location near Spear Motors on Jinja Road and adjacent to commercial establishments like car bonds and warehouses adds significant value to the planned investment. Mukesh highlighted the strategic importance of the site, stating that the ICD and other investments will play a crucial role in Shumuk Group’s expansion and its continued commitment to innovation and growth.
Despite the legal battles that have surrounded the property, Shumuk Group’s perseverance has paid off, allowing the company to move forward with its ambitious plans. The successful resolution of these disputes reflects the group’s resilience and determination to protect its business interests.
Efforts to reach Drake Lubega for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to his known phone numbers went unanswered. Meanwhile, the Shumuk Group continues to solidify its position as a key player in Uganda’s business landscape, with the upcoming projects set to bolster its standing even further.
