The MP for Kyadondo East, Muwada Nkunyingi has said he has been forcefully denied access to the ongoing Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Parliaments (CSCOP).
Ongoing at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the conference hosted by Uganda officially kicked off yesterday.
On Thursday afternoon, Nkunyingi through his X platform, claimed the Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers had denied him and other opposition MPs entrance into the conference premises.
“I was forcefully chased by SFC from accesing the ongoing Commonwealth Conference. SFC soldiers had 7 handwritten Opposition names including mine not allowed inside and grabbed me at entrance and strangely detained for 30 minutes sorrounded by SFC who later instructed me to march out,” Nkunyingi posted on X.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) MP who claims to have been formally invited by the Clerk to Parliament to attend the conference, believes denying the opposition members access to the conference was intentional.
“Have just met Hon Lutamagizi, he was also chased away by SFC, Kati which Parliament program is this when some of us are chased away from accessing” Nkunyingi wondered.
The Conference brings together the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the national parliaments of the independent sovereign states of the Commonwealth.
Earlier today, President Museveni officially opened the conference which is slated to end on January 6.
Accordingly, the conference has been attended by 33 Speakers, out of the 43 Speakers that had earlier confirmed attendance.
